Back to news summary 09/04/2015

According to the Federal Institute for Research on Building, Urban Affairs and Spatial Development (BBSR), the number of building permits for apartments in the major cities continues to race forward. Although the numbers recently reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) showed the national average growth moderating to 5%, a different picture emerges in the fastest-growing markets: the number of approved residential building permits in the big cities rose 17%, and for units in apartment blocks, the increase was even 23%. In cities with growing populations, 50 units per 10,000 personsreceived permits in 2014 – twice the rate of five years ago. Growth in the number of permits issued was especially strong in the seven largest cities, where it was up almost 25% to 52,500 units; for apartment building units, the increase was 28.4%. The top 7 already account for 27.7% of all apartment building permits in Germany, almost as many as in the other 100 independent cities put together.
